If there is one major aspect of the human condition which has
occupied more of my contemplative energy than any other it is
the
incredibly selfish nature of the vast majority of the people on
the planet. Don't get me wrong, I know some wonderful people,
selfless and thoughtful. I also know a whole lot more who are
absolutely incapable of exhibiting a shred of empathy for anyone
who is unfortunate enough to get in their way.
These folk think that the world came into existence for the sole
purpose of serving their personal needs and darkest whims exclusively. The worst
of it is that it is these negative traits are just those that we
seem to look for, and even admire, in those we choose to lead
us.
A constant source of bewilderment to this simply arranged mind
of mine is the apparent fact that a single human being, usually
male (barring one or two historical exceptions) can lead an
entire nation down the stony road to war with a neighbouring
nation, resulting in death, destruction and misery for the home
side. This can happen if the leader of the home side merely
dislikes the leader of the away side. Why not take a leaf from
Holly Johnson's book (FGTH) and put the two antagonists in
a ring with a pair of gloves.
On the home front, our leaders are constantly searching for ways
to erode our treasured rights of freedom; freedom of travel -
freedom of speech, even freedom of affiliation, all under the
guise of a sincere wish to protect us from harm; harm from
ourselves, harm from terrorism, even harm from bad government
when the self proclaimed saviours are those in opposition to the
currently elected bad guys.
So it goes, from the big man on the hill all the way down to the
village simpleton.
In the end all that remains is betrayal.
Human beings have a great capacity for betrayal.
